25 Must Know Endings

The following are must know endings that you really should understand and get to grips with. You need to understand these in great detail. This will lead to more wins, when winning, and more draws when losing (assuming your opponent does not know the ending well, of course). We won’t document all the endings in one go, we will slowly add more over time.

These endings are available in a Lichess Study for Lancashire Chess Junior players. You need to be a member of Lichess and also a member of the Lancashire Juniors Team.

K&P v K

Ending Number One – King & Pawn versus King

This is a crucial position to familiarise yourself with. In this position, does not matter who it is to play, White is winning – with best moves of course! You can still mess this up, if you are not familiar with the basic technique.

Rook Pawns

Rook Pawns – these can be tricky. As an example, take a peek at this game. It shows what can go wrong if White does not understand the way to best promote the pawn.
