Sunday 12th of July saw 90+ juniors taking part in the Lancashire Junior Blitz Championship. A 9 round ECF rated Swiss, to crown our Junior Blitz Championship.

The event was split into two sections. The Open section where players were playing for the title of Junior Champion, the Challengers section was for players who were new to Lancashire Chess events and did not have any rating.

The favourite and eventual winner was Max Fyson, with an 100% record. Max was the strongest player at the event, but it was not all plain sailing, Max was pushed in several games and was down to the wire on occasions, but his experience and knowledge came through in the end.

The Open Section had 46 players entered. Playing 9 rounds of Blitz, in this case 3 minutes with 2 second increments.

Max won with 9/9, there were two players tied with 7/9 but on tie-break the runner up was Harrison and 3rd place was Haeysam.

The Girls Championship was won by Sara.

In the Challengers we had 48 players entered. The same as the Open, 9 rounds of 3+2.

The overall winner of the Challengers was Edward with an 100% score 9/9. In second place with 7.5/9 was Alfie, and in 3rd place with a score of 6.5 / 9 was Alexander. The Challengers Girls prize went to Anumi.

It was a fun tournament, due to the weather we adopted hydration breaks (taken from the World Cup!) and this worked well. As always, the backroom team make these events the success that they are. Thank you to Carl, Hambel, Gordon, Ronnie, Richard, Harry, Lianne, Bethany, Colin and on his occasion Preston Grasshoppers for loaning some emergency chairs, when Colin realised we had taken too many entries!

Finally, as always, a thank you to our hosts Our Ladies and St Edward’s Parish Centre and to Frank.
